Our Philosophy

New Urban Communities was founded in 1998 by Kevin Rickard and Tim Hernandez based on a few simple principles:

  • People would rather spend more time with family and friends and less time fighting traffic.
  • People prefer small communities to large subdivisions.
  • People appreciate good design and livable floor plans.
  • Most people prefer to live close to employment, entertainment, shopping, cultural and recreational activities.

We build high-quality homes with features and construction techniques found only in much more expensive homes. We build these homes in small, lushly landscaped communities as close as possible to where people work and play. We offer these homes for less money than our competition, creating more value for our customers. And we treat our customers fairly, as we would wish to be treated.

New Urban Communities has been lauded by government, the news media, environmental organizations and neighborhood groups for its innovative, environmentally responsible approach to design, community development and homebuilding. New Urban was years ahead of the competition in building energy-efficient, green homes and communities. With rising gas prices, buying a New Urban home makes more sense than ever before. Imagine coming home from work on Friday night and never driving more than a mile until Monday morning. Imagine being able to walk to the grocery story, a Starbucks, your kids' school or a restaurant. Actually, you don't have to imagine. Visit one of our communities and see how we are changing the way people live, one home at a time.
