Kevin Rickard and Tim HernandezNew Urban Communities was founded in 1998 by principals Kevin Rickard and Tim Hernandez. Together Kevin and Tim have more than 50 years of experience in the development, financial and construction industries. New Urban was formed with the goal of synthesizing best practices from the production and custom homebuilding arenas with new urbanist architectural and community design principles. While other builders seek to grow through standardization and volume, New Urban succeeds in the marketplace through its small unique communities, cutting edge architecture, and a burning desire to create memorable places that stand the test of time. With operations in South Florida, Northeastern Illinois and Metro Phoenix, Arizona, the company has two major areas of concentration:
  • The development, construction and sale of housing and commercial space on small infill sites. Infill development takes advantage of existing roads, transit lines, utilities, parks, and schools, revitalizing neighborhoods without the unavoidable adverse environmental damage and social impacts of low density urban sprawl.

  • The design, entitlement and development of traditional neighborhood developments (TNDs) on larger parcels. Traditional neighborhood developments are typically compact, pedestrian friendly neighborhoods with a mix of land uses and housing types suitable for a range of incomes and household types. They have interconnected streets, prominent public spaces, and clearly defined centers and edges. TNDs honor the environment by featuring it and making it accessible to the public instead of eliminating it or limiting its use to a select few.
Kevin Rickard and Tim HernandezNew Urban Communities has been lauded by government, the news media environmental organizations and neighborhood groups for its innovative, environmentally responsible approach to design, land development and homebuilding.
